JEYi i9 JMS583 USB 3.1 NVMe M.2 SSD Aluminium Enclosure Case with 24cm USB 3.1 Type-A cable
The JEYI I9 NVMe M.2 PCIe SSD Enclosure enables easy read/write access to a wide variety of PCIe M.2 (NVMe only) SSD's over a super high speed USB 3.1 connection.
Sorry, this isn't for Mac SSD's, but...
If you need to access an SSD pulled from a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro or any other kind of Mac, then the JEYI-i9 isn't the one you want. Look here for the correct enclosure to suit.
Versatile and Backward Compatible
Based on the latest JMS583 PCIe Gen3 x2 bridge controller, this enclosure is the first of it's kind to allow any M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe SSD to be accessed via an external USB 3.0/2.0 or USB 3.1 port. Note, the included USB 3.1 Type-A cable is backwards compatible with USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports, but data transfer speeds will be limited to USB 2.0 speeds if you are not connecting to a USB 3.1 port.
Will this work in a Thunderbolt 3 port?
Yes it will! (But you'll also need an adapter). Since the included cable has a USB 3.1 Type-A host connector, you'll need to also purchase a USB 3.1 Type-A to Type-C adapter so that you can connect this device to your Thunderbolt 3 port.
Be aware though, that this is a USB device, so don't expect lightning fast speeds from it, just because it's connected to a Thunderbolt port. If you are looking for a Thunderbolt-enabled version of this type of enclosure and the ultimate in speed, then check out the Netstor Thunderbolt 3 NVMe M.2 SSD Enclosure Case.
How about cooling - will my SSD get hot in this enclosure?
PCIe NVMe SSD's are known to get rather warm, especially when under heavy loads. This is normal and if you apply the included thermal wafer pads to both sides of the SSD before you install, that will help. Note, power consumption varies widely for different brands and models (50mW -8W). A high-powered SSD under a heavy load will make the case feel rather hot as it absorbs the heat thrown off by the SSD controller.
No additional power cables needed
This enclosure is USB powered (just attach the included cable to a free USB Type-A port on your computer) so there’s no additional external power required.
Includes a cute red rubber band!
The folks at JEYI are thoughtful, and they've included a little rubber band to go around the case and secure the USB cable so that you don't lose it when travelling. Awww....
What sort of speeds should I expect?
You probably noticed that this enclosure supports PCIe 3.0 x2 whereas most modern PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD's support PCIe 3.0 x4. This means the maximum bandwidth is limited to 2 PCIe lanes, but even so, the sequential transfer rates are impressive and exceed 1000 MB/s (QD32), almost double that achievable in previous generation M.2 SATA based SSD enclosures.
Compatible with M.2 NVMe SSD's
This enclosure only supports M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD's with an 'M' Key. Be aware that some older PCIe M.2 SSD's like the Samsung XP941 or SM951 have an M key but utlilise the AHCI (rather than NVMe) protocol, and are not supported.
